The Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA), founded in 1936, is the official national body for model aviation in the United States, recognized by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale — the world governing body of all aviation activity. It sanctions more than a thousand model competitions annually and charters more than 2,500 clubs across the country. The AMA Nationals ("Nats") were — and still are — the crown jewel of that calendar.
The 1982 Nats were hosted in Lincoln, Nebraska. The event drew an estimated 5,000 contestants and spectators, making it one of the premier gatherings in the model aviation world. Competition spanned more than 60 events across four categories — free flight, control line, radio control, and scale models — with planes judged on speed, aerobatics, combat, racing, simulated aircraft carrier operation, and duration of flight.

Care & Maintenance
To care for your hat, spot-clean gently with cool water and a mild soap (avoid soaking the foam front or putting it in the washing machine). Reshape and air-dry. Store it brim-up to help it keep its structure.
If the foam gets dented or bends, a handheld steamer works great to relax it back into shape — just steam lightly and let it cool.
